What is an Energy Storage system?

An Energy storage system is simply a way of storing the excess solar power produced during
the day, that is not consumed by the house, for use at a later time rather than using energy
from the National grid.

Why would I want to store this energy?

This is simply a question of economics and security. If the excess energy not used during the
day is exported back to the grid you are paid a fixed amount, the “export tariff”. This is at
present about 4.77p/kwhr. However in the evening you would then have to buy this energy
back from the grid at about 15p/kwhr, an energy gap of 10p/kwhr. If you store this excess
during the day you can use it during the night, minimising anything you buy to as close to
zero as possible.

Do I keep my “feed in” tariff?

Yes the FIT is still kept providing the usual criteria are met. Not only this but for systems of up
to 30Kw you also are paid an assumed 50% export amount, even though you are storing it.

What happens if there is a power cut?

During the day the storage inverter will energise, and supply the house grid, which means the
solar system will continue to generate. At night time the storage inverter will power the whole
house anyway! You would therefore be immune to power cuts.

Is it complicated to operate?

Once the system has been installed there are no household variables to be changed. Your
system supplier may offer a once a year system check (batteries and cables etc.)

How long do the batteries last for?

With correct sizing and using 2V cells as detailed further along, we would expect the batteries
to last at least 10 years (note that normal 12V batteries might fail after only 2 years!)

What does the system comprise of?

A set of batteries, normally 2v cells and an extra charger/inverter

Can it be retrofitted?

Yes very easily.

What information do I need to give or work out ?

To accurately size the system we will need to know your daily energy consumption for a
whole 24 hour period, and also the split between energy usage during the day and night. Also
there will be certain “lifestyle” questions about whether anyone is home during the day, do
you have energy efficient appliances etc.


Hub-1 is the highest efficiency solution when most of the energy produced has to be stored in
the battery prior to use.It is also the simplest, most robust and lowest cost solution.


The BlueSolar MPPT charge controller uses solar power to charge the battery.The stored energy is used by a MultiPlus or Quattro inverter/charger to supply AC power to the load and to feed excess power back into the grid. In case of a utility power outage, the Hub will disconnect from the grid and continue to operate as a standalone system. If power will be fed back into the grid an anti-islanding device that complies to local regulations has to be added to the system.
Note: Hub-1 can be combined with Hub-2. One part of the solar array would then be
connected to a charge controller and the remainder to a PV inverter.


This is the most practical solution to add battery storage to an existing grid connected
PV system.


DC electrical power generated by the solar panels is converted to AC by a PV inverter connected to the AC output of an inverter/charger. The AC input of the inverter/charger is connected to the grid. Power from the PV inverter is supplied directly to the load. In case of insufficient PV power, the inverter/charger will supply additional power from the battery, or from the grid. In case of excess PV power the inverter/charger will use the excess power to recharge the battery, and/or to feed power back into the grid. In case of a utility power outage, the Hub will disconnect from the grid and continue to operate as a standalone system. Planning and commissioning of this solution is more complicated than Hub-1 due to interaction between the inverter/charger and the grid inverter.
